What I adore about Paris

January 29, 2016

Dear Max

If there is a place that makes my heart go aflutter, and where every of its corners interests me and gladdens my senses, it’s Paris. I think I loved it before I even when there when I was 18, and if there’s a place that doesn’t tire me or lose flavour, it’s Paris.

It’s the most visited city in the world, which might make this an unoriginal post, considering how many people obviously visit, and assumedly, love it, but I thought I’d share what gets me about the city, and why it was the choice (I think it was the only choice) for our honeymoon.

I love the buildings, I love how smart everyone looks. I love how every turn offers something beautiful to look at. I love the streets. I love how no matter how cold it is, people are sipping their coffees at outdoor cafes. I love the macarons, roasted chestnuts in winter, and hot chocolate at Angelina. I love how everyone walks in a rush, with purpose. I love the gardens and main sites. I love that the city is built around a river (I’m a huge fan of cities like this).

I love the transition of mood and buildings from one street or arrondisement to the next. I love that everyone appears to have their own style and personality. I love seeing dogs being walked all the time. I love the lights – and there are so many.

I love the beauty in anything from cobbled streets to beautiful doors to pretty pots of flowers on balconies. I love seeing people with baguettes tucked under their arms. I love the array of museums (even though I might not “get” all the art in them), and I love seeing what appear to be the most behaved kids.

Mostly though, I love what can’t be described or even conveyed in a picture. It’s that feeling that always pulls me back, that makes me happy and full of longing each time I pin another Paris picture on Pinterest. It’s pure magic.

I hope when you’re older we can one day experience Paris together, and that you might be able to feel, see or hear just some of the beauty that I do.

You might be interested to know that in the whole of Paris, there is only one stop sign, situated at the exit of a building company in the 16th arrondissement. The traffic system in Paris is mainly based on giving way to those coming from the right – eeek! Other interesting facts I’ve just found out on The Local:
– All the trees in Paris are referenced and measured. And there are 470,000 of them
– If you were to spend each day of your life in Paris visiting a different open terrace (of a bar, cafe, or restaurant), then it would take you 29.8 years to see them all – there are currently around 9,057 of them at time of writing (and more to come, I’m sure)
– There are 6,100 streets in Paris
– there are 1,784 bakeries in Paris

And you’ll probably hear or learn this well-known saying: Paris is ALWAYS a good idea. J’accord.

xxx Ta mere.
