Dear Max
Two LEGO sets, three little aeroplane models and lots of Kinder chocolate later, I’m back from a stellar holiday in Croatia with Andrew and his family. It was the longest I’ve ever been apart from you, and in that fortunate-unfortunate way, the holiday flew by, which made my longing time for you and your little-big hugs more manageable.
When we’re apart, usually we don’t speak on the phone as sometimes you feel a bit sad after, but this trip, we spoke on my last few night there. Surprisingly, these conversations were a highlight of my trip – you asked about my days, and we spoke about your school days (albeit briefly, as usual) and your upcoming birthday and party.
The trip was fuller, better and more picturesque than I could have anticipated, and it was filed with much eating, walking, sailing, reading (I read seven books – the best!) and just loads of fun.
Croatia is magnificent, and it’s relaxed – people are nice, and even in high-tourist places, things still feel quite chilled. Everywhere is a picture begging to be taken, and at each turn there’s something wonderful to be seen, enjoyed and walked.
As with any good trip, this one inspired, relaxed, recharged and fed me, and given me a bit of a glow. You’ll probably discover this on your own, but travelling, no matter where, gives perspective, and it changes one, even slightly. Whether one learns something new, relaxes, strengthens a relationship, just has fun, or reads new books, change happens. And that’s a fantastic thing.
I missed you so much my dude, and I’m so excited that I get to have my next sun-kissed holiday with you.
From Croatia to South Africa, with love
Mom
PS: There are hundreds of pics from the trip, but one day I’ll show you the full album.
