On growing up as an adult

August 7, 2013

“It’s not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it, myself.”
-Joyce Maynard

Dear Max

I’ve been doing a lot of reaching recently, and in finding my own light again, and a brighter life light, I hope that somehow it will make me a better mom. And that I can teach you down the line to love yourself, to never let anyone beat you down, to remember your own big shining spirit.

These are easy lessons for me to impart, but hollow if  I can’t follow through them myself. From here on, my lessons to you apply as wholly to me. Whether it’s kindness, saying please, or not shouting at the dog.

But more importantly, how can I ever teach you the value of yourself and how to respect yourself if my example to you is a fragile one.

Here’s to strong foundations and examples, and reaching things.
