That overrated thing called sleep

April 1, 2011

Dear Max

I used to gloat over the fact that you were one of “those” babies – the type who went to bed easily around 7pm, after a fairly relaxed routine of bath and supper, along with your blankie and bottle, and a lullaby from mom (albeit one out of tune).

But now you’ve become one of “those” kids – the type who isn’t keen to go to sleep before 10pm. And it’s not like you’re difficult, moody or playing up – you simply enjoy more playtime, whether it’s running after the dog, switching on buttons in the car, reading or discarding contents from cupboards and drawers.

I’m not sure when it all changed – I think it was after our overseas trip to NY and Toronto in November when you realised that lights out could be extended… and extended… and that more hours of play and socialising could fit into the day.

I’ve learnt that no amount of “quiet time” or relaxing wind-down routines work with you, and if we put you in your cot before you’re ready for some downtime, you holler until you are emancipated from your pen. One might think that because of my job I’d have all the solutions on how to get my baby to sleep around 7pm, when all the experts recommend it. But I’ve also learnt that babies march to their own rhythms, and the fact that you’re healthy, happy, thriving and blowing me kisses might indicate that you’re okay. It all just proves that you’re a superkid, and that less really is more… sometimes.

Sweet dreams my little angel

It is unbelievable how the frustration can build when they just don’t want to go to sleep, or when they just change their whole sleep-routine without informing you of their intentions.

BUT, when you sit there in the dark room and they look up to you and smile….

It amazes me at times that on the days my boy stays up later than normal, he still manages to wake up early!
