On this day, 22 September, Baywatch debuted on TV (1989), California University made the Dead Sea Scrolls public (1991), Elton John released the Diana tribute Candle in the Wind (1997), the first episode of Friends aired, the West Wing debuted (1999), and NASA’s Maven space probe successfully arrived in orbit over Mars (2014).
On this day, 22 September, you were born (2009), which is established in my history as the best day of my life, and the day where immense learning, love and growth began.
For the last five years I’ve written a post to you on your birthday, and there’s not much more I can add to the happiness, love and gratitude I’ve tried to express in those words. What I can add is how sensational this last year has been for you. For us.
You started a new school where everything has gone so well. You’ve adjusted brilliantly to new friends, rules, systems and routines, and there hasn’t been a day where we’ve questioned our decision, worried about your wellbeing, or gotten feedback from your teachers that hasn’t been stellar.
We went on a Skylanders adventure to San Francisco late last year, and we had so much fun – your patience and helpfulness during long hours of travel reminded me that sometimes I don’t know who is looking after who in our relationship… You’re grounded, smart and compassionate, and your reassurance constantly steadies me.
You had lots of firsts too – rock climbing, running a fun run, Park Run and road race, and swimming solo, and your tenacity and spirit seem larger than the little legs that carry you.
We opened our hearts to a special man and a special family who love you as if you’re “theirs”, and we are privileged to be enveloped in their kindness, support and love.
May you continue to have fun, grow, teach, learn and be kind, and here’s wishing you and us more moments together to add to our already amazing history together.
Thank you for being my sun. My son.
