A few weeks ago I stayed at Hands On Retreat in Craighall, just round the corner from where I used to work. I never knew such a tranquil place lived round the corner of busy Jan Smuts Avenue, which is what makes this guesthouse/spa so special – it’s a little haven in busy Joburg, and so unexpected and refreshing.
I went for a night at a time when leaving my laptop and toddler meltdowns behind for a few hours was necessary to function again. I ate, read, spent time in the big garden with a stream running through it, and traipsed around in the shweshwe slippers that Hands on Retreat provided.
Max, as much as I love being with you, sometimes dunking a rusk in tea or playing on my iPad without sharing either is cool, and giving to me at times lets me give my all to you. This doesn’t mean I’d rather swap you for fulltime me-time; it just means that I’m more patient to build Lego or try figure out why you’re crying, after reading a magazine or playing Angry Birds uninterrupted.
