Dear Max Pax
I’m pretty sure I’m not alone here (help me, moms) when I say that sometimes I “lie” to placate you. But lie is such a strong word – let’s call it elaboration. Or calming. Or I-Need-To-Say-Something-Before-My-Child-Loses-His-Sh*t.
So here’s what I sometimes say to you:
Elaboration: Dada/Gogo/Sisi is coming now-now
Truth: They’ll be back tomorrow or the next day
Elaboration: Mama needs to go and work
Truth: Mama needs to put her feet up, Tweet a bit, and check Reader on her iPad
Elaboration: Have some juice. And I’m going to put it into a little fun syringe
Truth: I’m giving you Stopayne. Please drink it
Elaboration: The bird in the road is sleeping
Truth: The bird in the road is dead
Elaboration: CBeebies have gone to sleep
Truth: It’s late. No more TV
Elaboration: The small car is much cooler
Truth: I’d rather pay R20 for a gift for you when we visit the shops, than R100 for the large dump truck
Sorry Max, I do what I need to do. I promise you full honestly when you’re older. Truth.
